[ARCHIVED] Idle-Free Week over, but lessons need to last

Vice Chair Choberka at Odyssey Elementary during Idle-Free Week

Council Member Luis Lopez at New Bridge School for Idle Free WeekIn their January 22 meeting, the Ogden City Council declared February 3-9, 2019 as "Idle-Free Week" in Ogden.

During the week, the Council released an informative video (below) sharing ways to limit idle time such as not warming up your car in the morning, turning off your vehicle in long lines, and others.

Council Luis Lopez and Vice Chair Angela Choberka visited local elementary schools to help children pass out fliers and stickers to parents reminding them to be idle-free while they pick up and drop off their children from school.

The Council worked with other local entities, such as the Weber-Morgan Health Department, Ogden School District, and Weber State University to raise awareness of the harmful impact that idling can have on air quality.

While the week of raising awareness is over, the Council hopes that residents take the lessons learned and apply them year round.

"We want to make sure that we're keeping our air quality a little cleaner," Vice Chair Choberka said. "I always say that we need to have an idle-free life instead of just a week. We can all think about it a little more and shut the car off when we're waiting for long periods of time."
