Free One Day Fun Competitions for Youth

Utah Jazz Fun Shot

The Fun Shot is played by one individual. The player has one minute to score as many baskets as possible from any of the five (5) different shooting spots identified on the basketball court. Elementary and middle schools will be holding preliminary competitions, with winners advancing to the City Championships at the Marshall White Center. The overall state finalists in the different age groups will competes during a halftime of a Utah Jazz game.

NFL/Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick

The Punt, Pass and Kick competition is a national program for youth ages 8 to 15. The event will be held in September at various Ogden City Parks. Participants have the chance to show off their skills in the areas of punting, passing and kicking. Age group winners advance to a sectional competition and winners at the sectional will compete at a halftime show of a National Football League Game.

Hershey Track and Field Meet

The annual Ogden City Hershey Track & Field meet is held at Ogden High School each June for youth ages 9 to 14. The program is designed for the beginner in track and field, and open to any boy or girl regardless of ability. Track & Field Events include a 50-yard dash, 44-yard dash, softball throw and standing long jump. Winners of each local event will advance to a District and then a State meet. Five children are chosen from each state final to form a regional team. These children, with chaperones, travel (all expenses paid) to the National Track & Field meet held in Hershey Pennsylvania.

MLB/Pitch, Hit & Run Competition

This annual Ogden City competition is held at Bonneville Park in May. Children ages 7 to 15 can demonstrate their baseball skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local winners advance to a sectional competition and winners from the sectional will qualify for a National Finals hosted by Major League Baseball.

Youth Classes

Start Smart

Ogden City Recreation Smart Start classes teach children age 3-5, and their parents, the basic skills and drills for basketball, baseball, and golf. Each class is limited to twenty children and their parents/guardian. Each child and parent receives a sport skill booklet and equipment for the class. The program teaches parents the proper fundamentals to teach their children in a fun atmosphere without the pressure of competition.

Ogden Fishing Club

Come join Ogden Fishing Club! The Fishing Club starting in April, for children ages 6-13. The club provides two hours of instruction, all the fishing equipment along with fun, knowledgeable Division of Wildlife instructors. This class is limited to 40 children, so parent hurry in and sign up your child today! For more information please contact the Recreation Office at 629-8253.

Fishing Class with a Parent

Learn to fish with your child! The Fishing Class will be held once a week for 5 weeks at Glasman Pond 1180 East 4600 South, this spring. The instructor will teach you and your child about poles, hooks, bobbers, casting, knot tying, bait, fly-fishing, bugs and how to cook your fish. You can register at the Ogden City Recreation Office, 1875 Monroe Blvd.

Swimming Lessons

This summer is a great time to learn to swim at the Lorin Farr Swimming Pool with our trained swim instructors! All youth age 4 and older will learn water safety plus how to improve their swimming strokes. Lessons range from water exploration for the younger swimmers to stroke refinement for older swimmers. Lessons are taught Monday through Thursday for a two weeks and each lesson is 45 minutes. Lessons are $30 per session.

Ogden Youth Summer Park Program

The Ogden City summer Recreation Program encourages children to keep physically fit and active during the summer. Five parks throughout the city are staffed with experienced recreation leaders who supervise activities, games, sports, field trips and arts & crafts, water games and swimming. They also participate in special event such as the Pioneer Day's Children's parade and the Hershey Track meet. The five Parks are Bonneville, 4th Street/Romney, Grandview, Jaycee and Rolling Hills. The program is for elementary age children grades 1st - 5th. The program starts the second week of June and continues through early part of August, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There is $10 registration fee for Ogden residents and $20 for non-residents. Extra costs will apply when the children go to facilities requiring an admittance fee.

Summerfest and Slam & Scram

Ogden City, in cooperation with the Utah Outdoor Volleyball Association, runs two exciting outdoor volleyball tournaments in the summer at Fourth Street Softball Complex at 502 Wall Avenue. The Ogden City Summerfest tournament is held in July and the Slam and Scram tournament August. All players receive a free tournament T-shirt, are entered into a prize drawing and all winner in each division receive awards! There is a division for all skill levels for men, women, junior and master players. Tournament fees are $15 per player that pre-register and $20 for day of the tournament.

Ogden's Second Annual Paddle Festival

The 2nd Annual Paddle Festival is a one day festival, for anyone six and older. Participants will enjoy a variety of new recreational, whitewater and flat water kayaks, canoes, sculls, kite boarding and sailboats in a supportive and safe setting. The festival will offer boating clinics and workshops for beginners and intermediates, as well as informal competitions for more advanced athletes. Rounding out the experience will be live music, children's activities, and great food. The event will support the Utah Rivers Council and other statewide non-profit organizations working hard to protect Utah’s rivers and waterways for future generations.
