Representing Yourself in Court

Rules and Procedures

You may choose to represent yourself in court and forgo the help of an attorney. Those who represent themselves in court are called "pro se" or "self-represented litigants." Think carefully before deciding to represent yourself without legal counsel; the process takes time and patience, and can be confusing. Remember, self-represented litigants will be expected to know and use the same rules and procedures as attorneys.

The Justice Court provides some resources to help those who choose self representation, but Justice Court staff cannot give legal advice; they are restricted to sharing only limited information about general court rules, procedures, and schedules.

A free public service offered by Utah State Courts holds information beyond what court clerks can provide. They may be reached on their help line or you can visit their website.
