Your sanitary sewer billed amount is based on the size of water meter. This allows us to approximate the amount of sanitary sewer generated from your property and directed into the city system. Ogden City uses the services of the Central Weber Sewer District to treat our sanitary sewer. The cost of that service is included as part of your utility bill. When you make your water bill payment you are also paying for sewer treatment and transportation services. If you have any questions about your bill, please contact our office.
Fats, Oils, and Grease:
Fats, oils and greases are a byproduct of cooking. They are found in such things as:
- Meat fats
- Cooking oil
- Lard and shortening
- Butter and margarine
When they are washed down the drain, the fats oils and grease stick to the inside of sewer pipes, both on your private sewer line and in the street line. Over time, it builds up and can block an entire sewer pipe.
Garbage disposals do not keep grease out of the pipes; they only shred it into smaller pieces. Commercial additives, including detergents that claim to dissolve grease, may dissolve the grease within a short distance and then pass it down the line and cause problems further down and away from the source.
The results of a grease-blocked sewer pipe can be:
- Sewage overflows in your home or your neighbor's home.
- Property damage including damage to carpets, walls and furniture.
- Expensive and unpleasant cleanup that often must be paid for by the property owner. The average cleanup cost is about $3,000 which does not include replacing carpets and repairing walls.
- Possible contact with disease-causing organisms
- An increase in operation and maintenance costs by the city sewer crew and Central Weber Sewer District; this causes higher sewer bills for customers.
Thanks for doing your part to keep fats, oils and greases out of the sewer
